Group History
In 1987, a group of concerned youth and adults were looking into enhancing youth programs of the Jaffari Islamic Centre. With a little bit of research and thought, it was determined that the Scouting Movement would serve as a good base for a youth program compatible with our values, yet connected to a larger community. Soon after, interested adults were recruited and questionnaires were given to the members so interest could be gauged. Lo and behold, there seem to be over whelming interest from the membership to provide for a Scouting Program in partnership with the Jamaat. September 1987 saw a kick for the first Muslim Scouting group in Toronto and in Canada.
The Group started off with a Beaver Colony, offering a program to Boys from the ages 5-7; a Cub Pack, offering a program to boys from the ages of 8-10; and a Scout Troop, offering a program to boys from the ages of 11-14. By 1989, the Group had great response from parents wishing to have their boys join this wonderful program, which offered variety of things to do in a safe Islamic environment. The group saw an increase in membership every year, especially after 1989, when for the first time in the history of Scouts Canada, a contingent of 2 leaders and 5 boys from a Muslim Group participated in the Canadian Jamboree held in Prince Edward Island. By 1992, a new section known as the Venturers was added to the three programs, offering a program to boys from the ages of 15-18. The Group by this time was bursting with energy and various people coming forward with enthusiasm to help run a well rounded program consisting of Islamic teachings, physical sporting activities, camping, hiking, and hands on learning.
Around the same time in late 1992, Scouts Canada nationally decided that local groups would be given the right to allow girls in the programs. Talks began within the group to have a separate girls program operating under the same banner and administration. By early 1993, plans were well under way to recruit and train various sisters to run a simultaneous girls program. By September 1993, there were three new sections for the girls. The Group over that year went under some tremendous growth and saw the program which started off with 25-30 members now sitting at 170 youth, with a leadership of 35 and administration done by 6 people. All sections continued to grow with an opening of a girls Venturer Section and the boys opening a Rover section, serving boys between the ages of 18-26. Soon after, many of the boys and girls who went through the programs came back to volunteer their time to give back to the youth of the community the benefits they received from the group.
In 1997 the group sent 2 contingents one of them being girls to the Canadian Jamboree held in Thunder bay Ontario. With many fond memories and activities the group celebrated with a dinner banquet the 10th Anniversary of the 392nd Muslim Scout Group of Toronto. Today the group looks forward to the new millennium to carve the path of good development and leadership of our future children and youth. May Allah (SAW) in all his magnificence bless all the volunteers who help our youth and may he in the name of the Prophet Mohammed (SAW) and the Ahlulbayt continue to shower his blessings upon this worthy cause of better youth leaders for the future of the community.
Ameen!
